SRtRC staff receive masterclass from RBA Equality & Diversity

On Friday 31st August the Show Racism the Red Card staff team were fortunate enough to take part in a full day of training which was a master class in understanding and dealing with hate crime.

Ranjana Bell, of RBA Equality and Diversity Limited led the session and began by creating a comfortable and conducive learning environment. With a dialogue approach to the training, Ranjana managed very successfully to encourage contributions from all of the team members and stimulated some very interesting and useful discussion.

Ged Grebby, Chief Executive of Show Racism the Red Card said, "I am grateful to Ranjana for delivering such a useful training package to our staff team. The day helped to expand our knowledge of hate crime across all of the equality strands.

"As an anti-racism organisation, people often approach us seeking advice on responding to hate crimes that they have witnessed or experienced. This session gave us an increased knowledge of what we can expect when hate crimes are reported to the police."

The main content of the day was centred around defining hate crime, differentiating between hate crimes and hate incidents, exploring legislation and police response to hate crime and looking at how to effectively challenge it whilst supporting targets of hate crime.

The methods of learning were diverse and participants benefited from the use of multi media, group work, and interactive discussion along with a fantastic question and answer session with Chief Superintendant Mark Anastasi who very articulately explained policies, procedures and the training the force receive in relation to recognising and responding to hate crime.

The day expanded knowledge amongst the team about discrimination and hate crime across the equality strands and empowered individuals with the correct and relevant information to support them in their anti-racism education. It provided the SRtRC staff with a safe and supportive space to have any questions and confusion answered and reinforced existing understanding about hate crime.

Participants commented that the day had been very helpful, enjoyable and stimulating and SRtRC looks forward to working in partnership with Ranjana and RBA Equality and Diversity Limited in the future.
